hiya guys (and gals of course) i just registered for this forum because im an amateur dj/producer and ive been thinking about using some of these midi files and upgrade them, make them nice and shiny and maybe add some beats and TA-DA! remix

but i had no clue that a midi file is similar to a multi track recording, so now ive got the .midi that i wanted, but when i load it i get 12tracks worth of stuff, but none of them 12 have instruments assigned... finally we made it to my question... how do i know which midi tracks are assigned to which instrument? is there like a color code or something?

i mean i could just assign random instruments to random tracks and try to figure it through this way, but im hoping that theres something more convenient, any help would be greatly appreciated confused

Seems like this is a freeware to edit midi which might be helpful to you (from the looks of the screenshot)
www.anvilstudio.com

Otherwise, I don't really know much about midi

thank you for replying ETPlanet.

that anvil studio prog isnt exactly what im looking for, maybe i wasnt too clear in my previous post so ill try again

let me try with an example...
i already have a prog to edit midi files, so i downloaded the Ennio Morricone - Once upon a Time in America (Ennio Morricone) midi, but when i loaded it i had 12 separate tracks that i had to assign instruments to, before i could hear anything...
so my question was is there a way to somehow find out which track is supposed to be which instrument, other then just looking at the notes and picking instruments that way

like with that particular midi i had no problem assigning instruments to most tracks, but a couple that only play a few notes i couldnt figure out

PS
im using Ableton Live8 if it matters
