Pet - Procedures for traveling from Canada to HK (Doing It Yourself) (Price is accurate as of July 2006)

1. Best to have your pet's vaccination up to date before you do anything else. Vaccination date must be at least 30 days and less than 1 year of the pet's departure date.

2. Apply for a permit from HK AFCD ($432 HKD for first pet, $102 HKD for each additional). This permit is valid for only 6 months. (You will receive the permit along with other helpful information by mail in around 3-4 weeks).

3a. Since I used Cathay Pacific from Toronto to HK, some information may not apply to other airlines/locations.

3b. You may now book your pet's airline ticket to HK (Cathay Pacific needs the permit to book the ticket). Their Toronto cargo department tel: 905 677 5110 and fax: 905 677 6123. You will be given an Airway Bill Number after the ticket has been booked.

3 - Note: To get an estimated cost, you will need to know the exact kennel size (usually written on the kennel above the door in small print). Remember, you will be paying in cash at the airport. Also the kennel should be made with plastic material. Minimum requirement is that the animal should be able to stand up, the head does not touch the ceiling of the kennel, and should be able to turn around freely inside the kennel. 4. With 14 days of the pet's departure, your pet must be examine by a license veterinary officer to get an health certificate (i.e. your local vet). This certificate must also be endorsed by a full time salaried government veterinary officer, and can be done at any one of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) office for $20CAD. 5a. (optional but recommended) Hong Kong AFCD has a free checking service to ensure that you have the proper documents in order to be exempted from quarantine/detention. Their tel: 2182 1002, fax: 2769 8600, and email: sfoa@afcd.gov.hk

5b. (not needed if 5a was done) At least 2 business days prior to arrival, you need to notify AFCD Import Control officers at tel: 2182 1001 or 2182 1002, fax: 2769 8600 OR face quarantine/detention.

6. On the departure date, please tender the animal to the airline's office before 17:00 or (5pm). For Cathay Pacific, it is located at 6500 Silver Dart Drive, Vista Cargo Building C, Room 233, Warehouse - Excel Cargo. (major intersection: Airport Road north of American Drive, turn left on the left turn shoulder)

1. Approach the cargo-handling agents of the airline concerned for the clearance of your consignment. (Either 'Asia Airfreight Terminal' or 'Super Terminal 1')

2. Obtain from the cargo handling agent the following documents: Airway Bill, Shipment Release Form, and Airline Certification

3. Present the "Shipment Release Form" to the supervisor of the cargo handling agent for retrieval of your animal consignment.

4. Bring along the pet to the relevant AFCD offices for health check and other livestock clearance procedures.

5. If all import permit conditions are complied with and all documents are in order, your pets will be released to you.
